Varaschin firm was founded in S.Pietro di Barbozza around 1930 by Matteo Varaschin, one of the “patriarchs” of Valdobbiadene viticulture who taught its own oenological “art” to the sons Renzo, Luigi and to the grandchild Orfeo. It’s located among the vineyards of the typical Prosecco area and the prestigious Cartizze that is exclusively produced here. Varaschin wineries are located in S.Pietro di Borbozza square, inside an ancient palace; here is where “The Confraternity of Valdobbiadene Prosecco” meets. Varaschin family is a proud member and testimonial of this association, founded to protect the quality of the product and the territory.
The splendours of Valdobbiadene, the town of wine and vine, queen of Prosecco, are annually celebrated in September by the National Show of Spumante. They are the result of a natural vocation for the vine growing, the most important event of the local life, embodied in more then millenarian traditions as S. Venanzio Fortunato, poet of the sixth century and bishop of Poit iers, testifies.
He is the most illustrious son of Valdobbiadene whose lines greeted the fatherland as “quo vineta vernantur”, the place where the vineyards are verdant. This “blessed” person gifted by poetical-gastronomical virtues, poet of palate joys and good wine, is the patron of the “Confraternity of Valdobbiadene Prosecco”. By invoking Saint Venanzio Fortunato inspiration and advice, a spectacular ceremony is celebrated every year in S. Pietro di Barbozza wine cellar ( Exhibition of Prosecco and Cartize wines, on Holy Saturday), for the Wedding at Cana festivity, where are nominated the Knights of Prosecco. The Confraternity, authentic University of Prosecco, was born on the 14th of August 1945 among the oneo-technicians of Valdobbiadene area, as stimulus to the economical resumption of the winemaking sector.
The production extends itself all over the band of hills of Treviso province, between the towns of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene; a series of hill chains running from east to west, following one another from the plain to the Pre-Alps, equidistant from the sheltering Dolomites to the north and the Adriatic sea which positively influences the clime and the nature of the countryside.
Conegliano hosts famous wine institutions while Valdobbiadene is the productive heart.
The production area covers the territory of 15 municipalities over an area of about 18.000 hectares of cultivated land. Vines are only on the sunniest part of the hills at an altitude that goes from 50 to 500 meters above the sea level. The hills of Prosecco DOCG appear to the visitor like a rhythmical series of sweet slopes and steep sides embroidered by vineyards. People of these lands love their origins; here it’s still possible to feel the love for traditions and the pleasure of hospitality. It’s a fascinating territory, rich of historical and artistic attractions, preserving many surprises in its valleys, from the small medieval hamlet to the majestic castles together with the evidence of the millenarian presence of mankind. The vineyards are still the real protagonists which, with secular patience, watches seasons, years and centuries passing by.
