Everything begins with Matteo
It is 1922. Matteo is nine years old, looking at the world with curiosity and determination. School cannot contain his desire to work, to learn and to live close to the land. It is during these early years that a passion begins to take root, one that will shape his entire life: the vine.
He observes it carefully, follows the rhythm of the seasons and, day by day, learns to understand its needs. From the winegrowers of his time, he discovers the value of patient work, knowledge passed down from generation to generation, and age-old practices rooted in experience, sensitivity and a deep respect for nature. For Matteo, winegrowing becomes more than a profession: it becomes a calling.
Meeting Emma Brunoro marks a defining moment in his journey. Emma descends from one of the pioneering families in Valdobbiadene’s winemaking history. Together, they embark on a project that brings together experience, tradition and entrepreneurial spirit, laying the foundations for what would, over the years, become the Varaschin Winery and the story of a family that, to this day, continues to preserve and celebrate the winemaking heritage of Valdobbiadene.
The second generation
Luigi e Renzo: the legacy of a dream
After the years in which Matteo laid the foundations of the winery, the Varaschin family story continues with his two sons, Luigi and Renzo, born in the heart of the 1940s. They grow up alongside their father, sharing the work in the vineyards and learning, season after season, the value of dedication, patience and respect for the vine.
Luigi, the elder son, chooses to deepen his passion by attending the Conegliano School of Oenology. There, he combines the experience gained within the family with solid technical expertise, becoming the winery’s oenologist and helping to develop its winemaking while remaining true to tradition.
Renzo, meanwhile, dedicates himself to the commercial development of the winery, taking Varaschin wines beyond the local area and opening up new opportunities for growth.
With different skills but a shared vision, the two brothers lead the second generation of the family. Winemaking, vineyard care and commercial development come together in a spirit of continuity, giving new momentum to the project begun by Matteo and strengthening the foundations of Varaschin Valdobbiadene 1930.
The third generation
Orfeo: the soul and courage
With the third generation, the Varaschin family story enters a new phase of growth. Orfeo Varaschin, Luigi’s son, takes on the legacy built by the generations before him, becoming the driving force behind the winery and a guiding figure in a project that continues to evolve while remaining true to its roots.
A highly skilled oenologist, Orfeo possessed a rare charisma and remarkable creativity. His ability to envision new opportunities, combined with a deep understanding of wine and the land, led him to guide the winery with an innovative vision, opening up new markets and bringing the Varaschin name beyond the borders of Valdobbiadene.
He loved to experiment, observe and interpret every nuance that nature had to offer, without ever losing sight of tradition or the identity of the land. In his wines, he sought balance, elegance and authenticity, believing that every bottle should be the truest expression of the land from which it came.
Orfeo 1969 is dedicated to him: a special wine that embodies his way of experiencing wine — with passion, courage and an unwavering eye on the future. Today, his example lives on within the Varaschin family, in the choices that guide the winery and in the commitment to preserve and pass on the values that shaped his life.
The current guardians of knowledge
Andrea e Raffaella: the present looking to the future
The third generation of the Varaschin family continues to write its story with Andrea and Raffaella, cousins and companions on this journey, now at the helm of the family winery. United by the same passion that inspired their fathers and their grandfather Matteo, they carry forward with dedication and sensitivity a legacy built on love, hard work and vision.
Andrea, Renzo’s son, has an innate creativity — a gift he “borrowed” from his father — and a natural ability to combine instinct with technical expertise. From a young age, he chose to work alongside Orfeo in the cellar, where the two became a close-knit and highly accomplished team, bound by deep mutual respect and a shared dream: to give Varaschin wines an authentic and distinctive voice.
Raffaella, Luigi’s daughter, grew up surrounded by the aromas of freshly pressed grapes and the familiar sounds of the family office. A strong and determined child, she learned early from her father that in this profession, alongside numbers and precision, there must always be room for heart and sensitivity. It is precisely this balance — between rigour and passion — that guides her today in managing the family business.
Together, Andrea and Raffaella embody both continuity and the future: two different yet complementary personalities, united by the same bond with the land, respect for those who came before them, and the desire to lead the Varaschin winery towards new horizons, without ever forgetting where it all began.
The fourth generation
Manuel: a new generation, a new future
And then comes Manuel, Raffaella’s son and the fourth generation of the Varaschin family. From childhood, he has lived closely connected to the two worlds that have always shaped the family story: the land, among the vineyards and the steep heroic slopes tended by his grandfather, and the kitchen, beside his grandmother, where the aromas of wine mingled with those of traditional family dishes.
Over time, Manuel chose his own path, becoming a chef, yet never leaving behind his passion for wine and for the land where he grew up. Today, he is the youngest face of this long family journey, welcoming guests to the tasting room at Casa Brunoro, where every encounter becomes a story and every glass a memory renewed.
His outlook combines a deep respect for his roots with a desire to experiment, bringing together the art of cuisine and the art of wine to create an experience capable of conveying emotions, stories and people.
His future is still to be written, but his dream is already clear: to continue this journey with the same love, the same courage and the same authenticity that, for four generations, have shaped the Varaschin name.
